The most demanding applications mandate effective sealing performance even under extreme temperatures and pressures, which is where multilayer steel gaskets display their technical excellence over any other type of inlet or exhaust manifold gasket. They usually consist of one or multiple layers of elastomer-coated or non-coated metal sheets.
Where grooves cannot be machined into the manifold to accommodate an elastomer gasket, metal-elastomer gaskets consisting of a base metal sheet (mostly alloyed steel / stainless steel / spring steel / aluminium) with vulcanised elastomer diaphragms are the intake / exhaust manifold gaskets of choice.

Striking the optimum balance between effective sealing ability and cost, elastomer seals with no substrate may be used for basic sealing of all engine joints, include intake manifolds. However to be effective they require supporting frictional features to be machined into the part being sealed, usually in the form of grooves.
