Valve rockers, or rocker arms consist of a center housing with a bushing, from which two arms project outward. The whole component “see-saws” around the central axis of the bushing when mounted on the rocker shaft. One of the arms is in contact with a push rod, in the case of bottom mounted camshafts, or the cam lobe directly, in the case of overhead cam engines. When this arm is actuated due to the cam lobe, the rocker rotates around rocker shaft and the other arm actuates the valve, opening it.
Usually there are lubricating holes and oil canals drilled in the bushing and its housing to allow engine oil to penetrate between the rocker arm bushing and the rocker shaft. The arm in contact with the camshaft may have a roller installed to minimize wear and energy loss.
High rigidity is of utmost importance for a valve rocker hence forging is the method of choice, however, to reduce cost, less rigid sheet metal rockers are also in use. For high performance engines, lightweight aluminum rockers with steel pads at mating surfaces are used. Two or more valves can be lifted using rocker arm bridges in multi-valve engines.
