Valve collets, also known as valve keepers, connect the valve spring retainer to the valve in order to ensure that the valve spring always maintains the valve in the desired position.
Valve keepers, or collets, are produced by cold pressing profiled steel strip. The profile of the steel strip is chosen depending on the number of grooves machined into the mating valve tip. Mating surface of the two halves are ground and case hardened.

The two halves of the keeper have a clearance gap between them after installation which causes the valve stem to be in close contact with the keepers and cause friction. This locks the valve in place, preventing rotation.
The two halves of the valve keeper rest against each other and allow for clearance between the valve stem and the keepers, thus allowing the valve to rotate. This promotes uniform wear of the valve seating surface.
