Depending on the shape and type of contact the tappet makes with the cam lobes, valve tappets are categorized as below.
The head of a solid lifter is case hardened or chilled cast to resist the scuffing action of the cam lobe sliding across its surface. The surface that comes in contact with the cam lobe is given a slight convex shape to promote gradual wear and seating during initial hours of engine operation. They have the following shapes:
In case of a roller cam follower there is a rolling contact between the camshaft and the cam follower, allowing for a much higher loading threshold. The roller itself is made of appropriate grade of steel, case hardened to resist frictional wear.
Hydraulic lifters, or hydraulic lash adjusters, use a small piston that, when filled with pressurized engine oil, acts like a hydraulic spring and automatically adjusts the clearance between the lifter and the cam lobe thus eliminating the need to adjust tappet clearance manually.
