Oil pan gaskets, also known as sump gaskets, seal the joint between the engine block and the oil pan, which contains the engine lubricating oil. Hence appropriate rubber and cork based compounds resistant to oil, solvents and fuels are used. Defective seal at the sump will cause oil drops at a minimum and excessive oil consumption in the worst cases.
In modern engines the crankcase, oil pan and the oil pan gasket function like a complete sealing and NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) damping system. For such applications, heavier cast oil pans are used instead of sheet metal pans, which necessitate the use of moulded rubber gaskets with complex profiles and rigid carriers.

AutoGRACE® brand oil pan gaskets are available in a wide variety of materials like synthetic rubber, natural rubber, cork rubber, nitrile, EPDM silicone, Neoprene and moulded rubber as per requirements of each application.
It is easier to install than synthetic rubber since it is more rigid, has higher mechanical strength, dimensional stability and still has excellent compressibility. When compressed, the air trapped within the cork cells exerts back pressure on the compressive forces, thus resisting “compression set” i.e. when the gasket stops pushing back against the compressive forces and loses its sealing capability.
They are highly customized to complex profiles of the crankcase and/or oil pan. They are usually installed into a groove machined into the components being sealed, which enables precise control over how much the gasket is compressed. Over-compression or splitting of the gasket is thus prevented. Arches may be moulded in place for bearing journals, thus allowing easier installation.
Rigid carriers that help resist deformation due to vacuum or heat are encased with moulded rubber or have edge-moulded rubber sealing beads to enhance compressibility. Especially suitable for extremely troublesome applications where other gaskets are known to fail.
