Product

The monolithic engine block is the carcass of the engine that serves a variety of purposes:

  1. Housing the entire power cylinder assembly including the cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, connecting rods etc. as well the crankshaft and camshaft(s).
  2. Engine accessories like the lubricating oil pump, oil cooler, coolant / water pump, starter motor, timing belt tensioner, oil sump etc. are bolted onto the engine block.
  3. Providing the mass through which channels are cast for lubricating oil and coolant media with strategically placed cavities where these oil and coolants are let out / come in contact with the components they are supposed to lubricate or cool down.
  4. Accepting and absorbing a plethora of loading cycles:
    • a. Ignition forces borne at the cylinder head bolts and crankshaft main bearings.
    • b. Flexural moments resulting from reciprocation and rotation of moving parts of the engine like pistons, piston rings, connecting rods, crankshafts, flywheels etc.
    • c. Tipping moments between the cylinders.
    • d. Crankshaft torque and its equal and opposite counterforce at the engine mounts.

TYPES OF OIL SEALS

DESIGN

CLOSED-DECK BLOCK

The top plate of the block is principally closed off to the outside world, with cavities and orifices present at the locations of cylinders, channels for coolants and lubricating oils and the cylinder head combustion chamber plate. This increases the rigidity of the block and has positive effect on top plate deformation, cylinder liner distortion and acoustics of the engine. However, cooling capability suffers around the TDC area since the water jacket is closed off in this area. Also the necessity to use sand cores to cast the water jacket limits the manufacturing processes to sand casting or die-casting only.

OPEN-DECK BLOCK

The water jacket opens into the top plate in open-deck designs. While this promotes better cooling around the TDC area it reduces the rigidity of the block. This negative effect can be ameliorated by using a metal head gasket which also permits a lower preload torque on the head bolts, further minimizing top plate deformation and cylinder warp. From a manufacturing perspective, the lack of sand cores opens up the possibility of utilizing the whole range of processes like using AlSi alloys in economical die-casting processes in conjunction with special techniques for cylinders and sleeves.

MATERIAL

Engine blocks are manufactured from Cast Iron – GG25 / GG30 grades with lamellar graphite or GGV with vermicular graphite, and Aluminium – AlSi alloys like AlSi6Cu4 / AlSi9Cu3 (hypoeutectic) and AlSi7Cu4Mg (hypereutectic without or without heat treatment). Sand casting, chill casting and die casting are the three principal manufacturing processes used to produce engine blocks.
